Global climate change is having a significant impact on biodiversity around the world. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and the increasing frequency of natural disasters all contribute to serious threats to ecosystems. One of the main impacts is the loss of habitat where many species live. Forests, coral reefs and wetlands, which are home to various living creatures, are threatened by deforestation and pollution. Additionally, climate change is disrupting species’ life cycles. For example, many species depend on certain climatic conditions to lay eggs, hunt, or find food. If temperatures rise, the migration patterns and reproductive cycles of these species could be disrupted. This has the potential to reduce the population of some species, even causing extinction. Research shows that species that cannot adapt quickly to these changes, such as many types of amphibians, are at high risk of extinction. Climate change also increases the risk of invasion by alien species. As temperatures increase, species that were previously unable to survive in an area may begin to colonize new areas. Invasive species are often competitive and can disrupt local ecosystems by consuming resources needed by local flora and fauna. This leads to a decrease in biodiversity, which means less resilience of the ecosystem to disturbances. The impact on marine ecosystems cannot be ignored either. Global warming causes the bleaching of coral reefs, which threatens the marine life that depends on them. Fish resources, which are the lifeblood of many communities, are also affected due to changes in fish migration patterns. If no action is taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the survival of many marine species will continue to be threatened. Loss of biodiversity also triggers a domino effect in the ecosystem. As the number of species decreases, ecosystem functions such as pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control that were previously carried out by certain species become disrupted. This has a negative impact on agricultural production and food security, which in turn affects global food security. Humans also feel the impact of climate change. With the loss of biodiversity, many medicines derived from plants and animals are at risk of being lost. Endangered genetic diversity could reduce the ability of agriculture and food sources to adapt to climate change. Recognizing the serious impact of climate change on biodiversity, many countries are starting to take steps to mitigate and adapt. Habitat conservation, development of species protection policies, and promotion of sustainable agricultural practices are some of the strategies implemented. Strengthening awareness of the importance of biodiversity in ecosystems is increasingly urgent. Collectively, global action is urgently needed to save biodiversity from the growing threat of climate change.
