Increasingly frequent global floods have a significant impact on environmental sustainability. This phenomenon is closely connected to climate change which causes increased rainfall intensity, melting ice and rising sea levels. In this context, the resulting impacts are not only physical, but also threaten the sustainability of the ecosystem and human welfare. One of the most striking impacts is habitat change. Floods damage agricultural land, eliminate soil fertility, and spread pollutants into the soil and water. In addition, many species of flora and fauna have lost their homes due to flooding, which has the potential to cause a decline in biodiversity. Species stressed by habitat loss often cannot survive and are threatened with extinction, creating disruptions in the food chain. The social impact of global flooding cannot be ignored either. Populations living in flood-prone areas often experience demographic shifts. People are forced to migrate to safer areas, burdening urban infrastructure and creating social tensions. This has the potential to increase resource conflicts, especially in areas with limited water availability. Water quality is another critical issue. Floods carry pollutants such as industrial waste, pesticides and dangerous chemicals into water bodies. This causes pollution that threatens the health of humans and aquatic organisms. Decreased water quality also impacts people’s access to clean water, triggering serious health risks. The economy was also badly affected by the floods. Losses from damage to infrastructure, agricultural land, and property can reach billions of dollars. Sectors such as agriculture, fisheries and tourism experienced a significant decline in income. Additionally, this economic uncertainty hinders investment and sustainable development. Unplanned urban development is also a factor causing increased flood risk. Deforestation for urban expansion and conversion of land into settlements worsens the situation. Forests serve as important water sinks, and when green areas are reduced, nature’s ability to manage rainwater is compromised. Mitigation strategies are becoming increasingly important in dealing with these impacts. Implementing a good drainage system and rehabilitating ecosystems such as mangroves and wet areas can help reduce the risk of flooding. Public education about the need for environmental sustainability is essential to encourage collective action at the community level. International initiatives, such as climate agreements, play an important role in reducing the consequences of global flooding. Cross-border cooperation is needed to deal with climate change holistically, which does not only focus on mitigation, but also adaptation to existing impacts. The impacts of global flooding are complex and interrelated. Without concrete steps to address the causes and consequences of flooding, environmental sustainability will be threatened. Therefore, there needs to be serious attention from the government, society and the private sector to ensure a better future.
