Sources of Legal News

Legal news is the ongoing reporting of legal events and developments from national and international sources. It may include court opinions, settlements, verdicts and other litigation developments as well as legislative, regulatory and corporate news. A number of resources are available for legal news, including Bloomberg Law, LexisNexis and Westlaw.

Bloomberg Law

A comprehensive source of legal news, focusing on 40 practice areas with information about case settlements, verdicts, regulation, enforcement, legislation and corporate deals. It also includes a series of legal newsletters. Available on the Bloomberg Terminal and as a standalone product, with unlimited news alerts and access to Practical Guidance.

Westlaw

This database contains articles and cases, including statutes and regulations, published by Federal agencies and the courts, plus presidential documents and executive orders. It can be searched by title, subject or key word and users can also save searches to receive email updates when new cases, opinions or legislation are added.

JURIST – Legal News & Commentary

This is an independent, student-run newspaper on issues of public interest and is written and edited by more than 60 volunteer law students. Articles are compiled from official Federal and state publications and reliable press sources. The website is free to use, but many links require the law school’s network or remote patron access code for access. It is a great way to keep up-to-date on current legal issues, and can be a good resource for developing writing skills.
